Songs for Loud Women
Brünnhilde tells her own story ...
Was she really asleep or just plotting within the fire?
Can her voice be heard in the realm of her Father
or must she BURN IT ALL DOWN.
Based on Katrina's PhD research of women with Large, Loud and Unladylike voices, Brünnhilde tells her own story and asks "What does it take to be a woman in the performing arts when you are a Valkyrie rather than an Ingenue?"
This project was made possible by developments @ The Street Theatre, Canberra as part of the Early Phase Residency, which took the "glimmer of an idea, a feeling, or impulse through to concept treatment and pitch". The Street Theatre also provided space and support for Composers' Workshops with leading Australia composers Katy Abbott, Anne Cawrse, Melody Eötvøs, Roya Safaei and Sally Whitwell to work with Katrina to collaborate and discover if this glimmer could become a reality.
The five songs were recorded by Katrina Waters (mezzo soprano) and Sally Whitwell (piano) in 2025 at the Recording Studio ANU School of Music under the production of Recording Engineers Matt Barnes and Sophie Edwards.
Commissioning and recording supported by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Performing Arts Development Fund and the ANU Gender Institute
